Despite Caligula’s orthodox reputation as having descended into deranged megalomania resulting in the destruction of Rome, it is apparent this perception is not completely accurate. Caligula’s reputation has been distorted by the sources of his reign in a deliberate attempt to undermine his rule and justify his death and this misrepresentation has transcended into later sources. The truth of the failure of Caligula lies in his tumultuous upbringing which caused his repressed character flaws to emerge later in his reign and the lack of personal qualities and appropriate experience upon his appointment as Emperor. Despite this, Caligula is not deserving of the idea that Rome was destroyed under his rule (despite serious upset in the capital), and instead demonstrates the consequences of allowing complete power to an inept ruler.
