Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (aka. Caligula)

Gaius, nicknamed 'Caligula' (bootikins) by soldiers in his father's army, was part of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and reigned as emperor between 37AD and 41AD. He was the son of Germanicus and Agrippina and was descended from the emperor Augustus. He was the third emperor of Rome; preceded by Tiberius and succeeded by Claudius, and assumed the role at age 24.

Tiberius was Caligula's great-uncle, and the preceding emperor. Also a member of the Claudio-Julian dynasty, Tiberius removed himself from Rome and spent his last years in Capri, summoning Caligula to live with him in 31AD. The emperor was supposedly implicit in the assassination of Caligula's father Germanicus, and was responsible for the banishment of Agrippina, Nero and Drusus (Caligula's mother and brothers). Tiberius named Caligula and Gemellus as his heirs in 35AD, before he died two years later at the age of 77. He reigned for 22 years.

Tiberius's grandson and cousin of Caligula, Gemellus was pronounced dual heir along with Caligula by Tiberius. Upon Tiberius's death however, Caligula became sole emperor. Gemellus was adopted by Caligula as his heir, but later murdered by the emperor for conspiring against him.

Macro was a prefect of the Praetorian Guard during the reigns of both Tiberius and Caligula. He replaced Sejanus (Tiberius's previous Praetorian Prefect) and played an important role in Caligula's ascendancy as Emperor. In 38 AD-within a year of Caligula's reign, he fell out of favour with the emperor and it is unknown if he committed suicide or was executed.
